​I am a dedicated public servant, social worker, and community development professional proudly serving Ward 6 on Barrie City Council. I am committed to principled leadership, hands  on engagement, and delivering practical, results-driven solutions that improve the quality of life for residents.

​

I came to Canada in 2008 as a political refugee from Ethiopia, initially settling in Regina, Saskatchewan before making Barrie my home. Prior to arriving in Canada, I worked as a freelance journalist and author. My journey has been shaped by lived experience, resilience, and a deep commitment to fairness, opportunity, and community well-being.

I have been proud to call the Barrie area home for several years, where I live with my wife, Hanna. Together, we are raising our three children, Abinet (13), Maya (11), and Blaine (2). My family remains central to my values and my commitment to building safe, strong, and thriving neighbourhoods.

My professional background spans social services and community development, where I have worked closely with individuals and families navigating complex social and economic challenges. I have also volunteered with the Salvation Army and coached youth soccer, reflecting a long-standing dedication to youth development and community support.

Through both professional and volunteer service, I have developed a strong understanding of the pressures facing residents today, including public safety concerns, housing affordability, cost of living challenges, and the impact of inflation on seniors and working families. These realities continue to inform my approach to thoughtful, accountable, and responsive public service.

I have always been available to Ward 6 residents when they need me. Over the past three and a half years, my “Yearly Vesting Program” has given me a better opportunity to know and learn about our community, its strengths, and its challenges.

As an elected Councillor, also I serve in the following roles:

 

• Chair, Seniors and Accessibility Advisory Committee

• Member, Infrastructure and Community Investment Committee

• Member, County of Simcoe Human Services Committee

• Member, Barrie Public Library Board

• Member, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit Board​

I am seeking re-election as Ward 6 Councillor to continue building on the progress we have made together. I remain focused on strengthening neighbourhoods, supporting responsible growth, and ensuring Barrie continues to develop as a safe, vibrant, and sustainable city for all.

 

At the heart of my work is a simple belief: that by working together, we can build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous community for today and for future generations.
